Kiriko Sushi – Westside

Probably the only two things you can count on at sushi houses here in LA are the green-capped reduced sodium Kikkoman and fortunately, lots of assertive alternatives to the cliché California Roll. Often unassuming in terms of layout and decor, you can usually never tell much about a sushi joint until you’ve started your meal. There’s the typical handful of tables alongside a counter that may or may not be crowded. In that sense, Kiriko Sushi is no different, but it’s the food that matters.  Selected as one of Jonathan Gold’s  99 Essential LA Restaurants as far back as 2007, this Sawtelle area spot has been on a roll ever since.

There are two things you need to familiarize yourself with at Kiriko…ice cream and Omakase. Omakase is basically translated as “to entrust” and to “be protected.” And believe us, you want to pay the extra, entrust, and be comfortably in the Tsukiji fish market trained hands of Chef Ken Namba. Dinner Omakase ranges between $80 and $120, depending on chef’s choice. Enjoy a nice dose of sake and afterwards be sure to partake in the white truffle and brown sugar-ginger ice creams.
